   VICE CHANCELLOR McGehee TRANSITIONS
Long time educator, musician and friend, Vice Chancellor of City University Los Angeles, Dr. Maurice E. “Dee-Die” McGehee, passed away in his sleep.  Hours before his retirement for the night, and slipping into his final slumber, “Dee Die” was reported to have been in his customary “vivacious and articulate frame of exciting existence!”
Eulogized by actor Brock Peters at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, many friends, family and notables assembled to pay respects to a man so many will remember in their own special ways.  He meant so much to so many.
In his adopted new home of Las Vegas, Nevada, a private ceremony afforded well-wishers the opportunity to be together once more to salute and giant of a man and friend.
It was Dr. McGehee’s wish that Chancellor Anderson also speak at his memorial service, and he recited part of Longfellow’s “A Psalm of Life.”

Infringements on the CULA© Copyright

Chancellor Anderson put  MGM Studios (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc.) on NOTICE that its movie titled “Legally Blonde” not only employed the CULA “likeness and image” but also “borrowed” the fundamental construct that makes the movie work—the CULA-HARVARD connection—right from the university’s copyrighted Web Site.
In his letter to Barbara van Sickle, Head of Litigation at MGM, Chancellor Anderson alleged that “Writers, surfacing the Net for story ideas,” came upon the CULA Web Site, and noting a female alumnus from CULA (a ’little-known’ school) was accepted and went on to Harvard (a famous, well-known school) formed the ‘germ’ or central construct that made the light-hearted movie work, starring Reese Witherspoon, as the highly unlikely  blonde who gets accepted, matriculates and makes females of all ages ‘proud’ of her unsuspected “academic genius.”
Infringements of  “personal, creative and intellectual property rights is a very serious matter,” one out of state lawyer volunteered to Chancellor Anderson, in support of his claim against MGM.
Though CULA’s claim of copyright infringement has not been settled with MGM, the Studio is releasing ‘Legally Blonde 2” (July 2, 2003).  We in the CULA family only hopes the producers will this time show more respect and omit from the new movie any references to “CULA,” whether they intend to suggest ‘City University Los Angeles” or what they have alleged as ‘”a fictional institution, California University Los Angeles.”
Trustees of CULA and directors of the City University Los Angeles corporation join the Chancellor in taking exception to any trivializing of this institution or its goodwill.  Many honorable and world-renown individuals have CULA degree certificates on their walls and they should never have to “cover the certificate or apologize to anyone for having the certificate, because some lazy screen writer ‘borrowed’ a name and an idea that belonged to someone else,” said Chancellor Anderson in a recent update on the MGM issue.
Any alumni concerned about this matter may inquire directly.

History of “Forgiveness”

In 1995 when Evaluations and Management International, Inc. (doing business as CULA/City University Los Angeles), elected to “no longer be a California institution,” it forgave the State’s oversight agency (now called Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education), as it had earlier ‘forgiven’ the California State Bar (for “awarding two years of college recognition to any 26- year-old who could past a simple “equivalency test.”  “The Bureau” was forgiven for (1) Issuing an Authorization Certificate which contained a disclaimer: “...is not accreditation...and does not imply accreditation.”  (2) For informing the public, over an 18-month period, that “City University Los Angeles IS NOT” authorized/approved when all the time, The Bureau meant “Century University” (the likeness being both schools began with the letter “C”).  (3) For forcing academic institutions to adopt a “Refund Policy” based on “number of hours of classroom instruction” (a norm applied ONLY to trade and technical/vocational courses!)  (4) For sending out unqualified “Visitation Team” members who were incapable of “...reading, thinking or rendering anything close to an academic assessment.”
(5) So blatantly operating in “a conflict of interest” as to force private schools “out of California,” including the University of Phoenix, now America’s largest private school!  Finally (6) For more than two years running, using the logo of CULA© on another school’s listing!

American Veterans—Protected or Violated?

Everyone knows the pain and horror of the Vietnam era; but, how many remember how many years it took for our government to admit “there is a correlation between Agent Orange (compound of nitrite/dioxin) and the neurological disorders experienced by the offspring of veterans?  And, to the motley group of ailments suffered by the veterans themselves?
Remember “The Gulf War Syndrome?”  It took ten years for the government to acknowledge the effects our military personnel suffered from exposure to chemicals in the Gulf War!
CULA alumnus, Dr. Barry Allen Krupkin, a veteran of Vietnam, and Supreme National Commander of the UNITED VETERANS OF AMERICA, writes that “Much more upset and misery befalls thousands of veterans who have been denied medical health care as the legal battle rages on and on,” noting that even the “free health care” promised WWII and Korean veterans have not been realized.
Dr. Krupkin can be contacted for further information at POB 539, Freeport, FL 32439.

CULA HONORS GREATNESS

As it has done for twenty-nine years, CULA reaches into the worldwide community to recognize and honor women and men whose lives reflect all the greatness the human spirit can know and experience.
This tradition goes back to 1975 when CULA became the first to declare January 15, the birthday of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a “legal school holiday.”  In that same year, Dr. Anderson awarded CULA’s first honorary doctorate degree to Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. King.
Through the years, CULA has not failed to say “thank you” by recognizing individuals from all walks of life, who have made and do make living a better experience for human kind, in all parts of the world.
This year, CULA is pleased to honor:  The Right Reverent R. Peter Keegan, Bishop, Church of Divine Love, of Hemet, California.  A former POW, contemporary of Dr. Anderson at Yale University, and creative genius in many areas of exceptional achievement.                                              Canon Charles Henri Cheatham is honored for his unique musical talents and internationally noted achievements as director and founder of The Los Angeles Episcopal Chorale Society, Inc., a 40-voiced group that took honors in Vienna, Austria, and where “Chas” was selected from 115 directors to conduct the 1000-voice festival finale.  It is unequally rear as well that such a young, living person is “Canonized” by the Episcopal Church.  Dr. Peter John Zwerver, Associate Dean of Faculty at CULA has given so much to so many, but has not been recognized for all his unselfish contributions to students at various levels of academic pursuits.  It is well established that Dr. Zwerver has been an active and creative part of the alternative higher education movement in America.
Others recognized during ceremonies for the Class of 2003 are from around the world.  Young-Hwan Jeon continues to distinguish himself in business and higher education circles in Korea.  Siva Ramakrishnan Prasad is a man of distinction in his island nation of Mauritius , off the coast of India in the spiritual heart of Asia.  His scientific contributions are well known in his native land.  Gundmi Sudhakar Rao has been active in the world of financial management and development over a period of many years.  His contributions to the betterment of society in general cannot be singularly noted.
So, to all those honorees, whether they are named or not named, from 1974 through 2003, let it be said and known that CULA has been, itself, honored by touching such great lives.
Chancellor Anderson’s Book Nominated
In the Introduction, Dr. Vivian Virginia Vetrano writes:  “Young people who are now programmed to care so little for their precious physical bodies need to discover this book right now, before their brains, livers, kidneys, digestive systems and all their other vital organs have been damaged and partly destroyed by medication, hard drugs, and nutrition-less food….”“
Dr. Anderson’s book, The Nature and Purpose of Disease: Definitive Guide for Peoples with melanin, earlier cited by the publisher as “recommended for the Pulitzer Prize is recently nominated for “The Best New Book of 2003” by the Association of Independent  Publishers which will hold its annual meeting in New York July 19, 2003.  Dr. Anderson has been invited to attend.
When informed and asked what he thought of his book’s appeal, he said, “I am truly grateful—actually—because I hope this means people are seriously taking a new, purposeful look at what they have, historically, accepted at face value.”  And, he concluded with these rather powerful words:  “Since Natural Hygiene is not proven wrong,, we as individuals can control our state of well being by controlling how we eat.”
Recent Student/Alumni Successes
Marla Juan-Darien, a candidate for the Ph.D. in pastoral counseling, successfully defended her dissertation before a Doctoral Committee of five faculty panelists.  Not only was the session spirited, but the two-way flow of information was enlightening for all participants.  After being advised of her successful defense, candidate and committee went off to lunch, traditionally hosted by the successful candidate.

Tarek Al-Halawani draws close to completing his doctoral studies in financial management.  Tarek earned his master degree from CULA in 2002.  He is expected to complete his doctorate early in the year 2004.

CULA is looking for an Editor-in-Chief for the NEWSletter.  Interested alumnus or enrolled student can send a resume to the attention of the Chancellor.

CULA: A NEW ADDRESS IN LOS ANGELES

CULA has “moved’ its mailing and contact address from Inglewood to Los Angeles.  Please make a note and address all mail to: Post Office Box 45227, Los Angeles, California 90045-0221.  This change has been promoted for a number of years by some alumni and friends, who claimed either they could not “locate” our school in the locate telephone directory, or that ‘one expects to find City University Los Angeles in Los Angeles, not some other city.
Of course they are correct; and, no one disagreed.  But, many people were not privileged to know that CULA moved its offices to Inglewood in 1996 so that Chancellor Anderson could be near his late wife, Agnes Alberta Fox Anderson, who was hospitalized in a hospital in Inglewood with terminal cancer.  The late Mrs. Anderson passed away in May of 1997, but there was no “rush to relocate the administrative offices of the worldwide institution,” as it was stated later in a press piece.
But, the mailing address for contact is not all that has changed.  The Office of Alumni Affairs, of course, the worldwide coordinator of information and confirmer of records for graduates and students, receives its mail at the CULA Master Mail Processing Center, P. O. Box 45227, Los Angeles, California 90045-0221.
But, equally exciting is the NEW FACE OF THE CULA WEBSITE!  All of our worldwide family of alumni and friends are invited to visit the Web Site, and take family and friends on a tour of the site; make input and suggestions; and generally feel proud of your Alma Mater.
Did you know that at the CULA Web Site there is a BOOK STORE where you can purchase CULA t-shirts and caps?  Mugs and sweat outfits?  Or, that you can order gifts for friends and family, pay for the items, and have them shipped with your name and greeting?  Did you also know that you can find several of the past CULA NEWSletters printed at the Web Site?  As one alumnus recently reminded us, there are still some typographical errors in a number of the paragraphs as well!  We are aware and will eventually correct these; but, that kind of thing happens when the budget for support activities is not well enough supported by alumni giving.
It should be pointed out, however, that CULA alumni have been generous and continue to be generous.  So, we do not want to imply that Web Site problems cannot be fixed because donations are not coming in fast enough.
One more thing about a new address for CULA:  Would you believe a NEW NAME?  Very soon now, it is expected that CULA will receive approval and authorization from the Higher Education Commission in West African (Nigeria, actually) to begin “weekend and evening lectures” in such subjects as business, computer science, nursing, education, management, accounting, religious subjects, law, and other topics as deemed advisable.   We expect CULA to continue the services it began providing in the country in 1985.
